Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has always been intertwined with my business strategy. With PQE Group offices all over the world, we have the opportunity to support and empower so many different communities. Over the years, I’ve learned the Do’s and Dont’s of making a successful CSR initiative and I’m proud to say that many of the initiatives we have started at the PQE Group have achieved great things.
CSR is not only a way of giving back to communities, but it can also play an important part in helping to tell your company’s story. The voices of your employees and stakeholders can be heard through the work put into CSR, helping people feel more connected to your company overall.
Here are three tips to creating a successful CSR initiative that will allow you to support communities, enhance your brand image, and empower your employees to do good in the world, all at the same time.
Choose CSR Initiatives You Believe In
Of course, there are so many worthwhile initiatives in the world, it can be hard to know where to start. To start, think about what issues are the most important to you and that you fervently believe in. No CSR initiatives would have ever got far without the genuine belief that I and my colleagues had in them. Even before I introduced CSR to the PQE Group, I was involved in various charitable activities. It needs to come from a genuine place of wanting to help if it’s to succeed.
For me, female empowerment has always been close to my heart. I worked full-time on growing my business as a single mother for many years, so I know what it’s like to forge my path in a male-dominated industry. For that reason, I’ve always been drawn to CSR initiatives that support women and girls, particularly when it comes to women in STEM.
In addition, one of the PQE Group’s long-running CSR initiatives is with Rare Partners, an organization designed to support research in the field of rare diseases. As I have a close friend with a rare disease, this is another cause close to my heart.
Next, you should also consider input from your customers, employees, and stakeholders. Is there a cause that links to what your business does? Do any of your employees have a personal connection to a charity or organization that they would like to support?
CSR initiatives thrive when backed by a dedicated community and hard-working teams. The more you incorporate the passions and ideas of everyone involved in the planning, the more commitment, and dedication you can expect from them.
Allocate a Budget and Resources
Once you’ve decided on one (or even several) causes that you’d like to dedicate resources to, it’s time to allocate a budget. Often, money can do even more good when invested in awareness campaigns or fundraising events than when simply donated to a good cause. For example, in our work with Rare Partners, PQE Group employees around the world take part in sporting and cultural events each year. The money and awareness they raise go a lot further than a regular donation ever could, so always try to get creative when allocating resources to different CSR projects.

For example, the reason our CSR project with the Moonlight School in Kathmandu was so successful was that we got so many employees engaged in it.
