Discipline Is Destiny

After a year of indulging in wonderful books and insights spanning various areas of interest, “Discipline Is Destiny: The Power of Self-Control (The Stoic Virtues Series)” by Ryan Holiday was the perfect book to end 2023! Holiday dives into what it means to live a bold and brave life, which I, as a global leader and lover of travel, can identify with and appreciate fully.

This book celebrates the power of self-discipline and how it is an integral part of mastering any feat or venture. A key part of this is recognizing that external factors are only a fraction of the reasons for the outcome of anything. More importantly, it is crucial to master our own thoughts and emotions and emulate self-discipline in order to accomplish our wildest dreams.

I especially enjoyed the references from the writings of Greek Stoic Philosophers like Zeno of Citium and other historical figures ranging from Queen Elizabeth II to Napoleon, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Babe Ruth. These examples testify to the fact that we can learn many lessons – whether cautionary or absolute – from various figures and people.

Holiday highlights that without boundaries and restraint, we hinder ourselves from reaching our full potential and jeopardize what we have achieved. As the CEO and Founder of PQE Group, I can say undoubtedly that if I did not practice self-discipline for the many decades it has taken to grow our organization from a small start-up in Tuscany to the global Life Sciences leader it is today, the company may still only be a figment of the imagination.

Learning to restrict the need for excess is a valuable skill in a world of temptation. Holiday notes that the heart of Stoicism is four simple virtues: courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom. For those who want to take their skills, ideas, or life to the next level, “Discipline is Destiny” will help guide you down the path to self-mastery by the avenue of discipline.

I hope that if you choose to read this book, it sparks within you the same passion and drive for excellence that it did in me!
